Knowlton native wins $2500 Hom Nursing Scholarship
Knowlton, Montana native Amanda Anderson is the 2009 recipient of the Millie & Ken Hom Nursing Scholarship. The $2500 scholarship program is a competitive process which draws a large number of applicants each year with eastern Montana roots, one of the selection criteria.
Anderson graduated from Terry High School in 2007 and while pursuing college has worked at Holy Rosary Healthcare and Prairie Community Health Center as a UAP. She is in her second year of nursing school at Miles Community College in Miles City. Her career interests within the nursing profession include women’s health and obstetrics as well as ER.
In 2005, Ken Hom of Miles City established a substantial endowment in memory of his late wife, Millie, the founder of the nursing program at Miles Community College and a true pioneer for the nursing profession in Montana. Hom partnered with the Holy Rosary Healthcare Foundation to fund the endowment that will provide nursing scholarships and professional opportunities for years to come.
The Millie & Ken Hom Nursing Scholarship Program criteria includes: successful completion of one year of college in a nursing program (or is currently enrolled in their first year); is pursuing an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree program related to nursing; grew up, was educated, now resides and/or will work in eastern Montana; has a proven need for financial assistance.
This year, the five-member, independent selection committee chose five finalists from Savage, Broadus, Sidney and Miles City, Montana. Anderson will receive $2,500 in the 2009-2010 academic year to continue her nursing education. Tayvee Steen from Miles City, Montana, was first runner-up.
The Millie & Ken Hom Nursing Scholarship Program is administered by the Holy Rosary Healthcare Foundation and scholarship recipients are selected by an independent committee.
